Sharp as its name suggests in features, the Sanyo Katana has finally landed in front of Sprint's doors. Customers can now enjoy the Katana Eclipse's dazzling lighting effects and Sprint's high-speed broadband network for just $100. Users can assign 40 different illuminations for the numbers in their 500-entry phone book and this Sanyo clamshell will light up just the way they like when that person calls or messages them. The lighting aside, the Sanyo Katana is also capable of turn-by-turn GPS navigation, has dedicated music controls, and supports Sprint Radio for up to 150 channels. Along with other features like Bluetooth and microSHDC support for up to 8GB, it also sports an internal 2-inch 65k color TFT LCD display and an external 1-incher for quick access to the media player or a glimpse of who's calling. The 1.3-megapixel camera is in no way a digicam replacement but it should be enough for those situations when the urge to capture something is overwhelming.

Available now on Sprint for $99.99 with a two-year contract.
Bell to Launch Sanyo Katana Eclipse

Bell is going to launch the Sanyo Katana Eclipse for their Canadian subscribers. The handset will sell for $49.95. The trick is that you would have to sign a 3 year contract for that price. A 2 year contract means you have to pay $99.99 for the handset while a more simpler 1 year contract will get you a $224.95 price for the Sanyo.

Those of you that want the Sanyo without any kind of commitments will get it for about $274.95. I know it seems a lot for the Katana Eclipse but hey, you won't be getting yourself into any agreement you don't want.

Sprint customers you'll have to wait for the US release!

Sanyo Japan has announced the launch of its latest Katana LX Cell phone with Sprint. This CDMA cell phone has a sexy and slim exterior. In a lightweight Clamshell design the Sanyo Katana LX has alot of amazing features like GPS navigation, high-quality speakerphone, Bluetooth, VGA camera, and Sanyo's unique call screening feature. The mirrored front of the cell phone bars view of the OLED outer display which has a resolution of 128×160. This 3.4 oz weighing phone runs on CDMA 850 / CDMA 1900 modes. It will be available soon at an expected price of 49.99 US dollars.

Sprint announced that Samsung Instinct will now be available to its customers. Featuring GPS navigation, TV and web browser, the Samsung Instinct features one-touch access to favorites. With a full touch-screen interface and large display, the screen features localized tactile feedback - called haptics - allowing you to sense the QWERTY keys as you type (something missing from the iPhone).

A Voice to Action button provides many functions using voice activation, including call, text, picture messaging, traffic, movie, sports, news and search. The first EV-DO Rev A device, Samsung Instinct is also compatible with the Sprint Music Store from where you can download songs for 99 cents each. Sprint TV for live and on-demand entertainment is also available.

The phone measures 2.17 x 4.57 x 0.49 inches and weighs less than 4.5 ounces. While pricing info is not yet available, a special plan with unlimited data is being touted for $69.99/month.

Sprint announced two new Nextel Direct Connect devices, the Sanyo Pro-200 and Sanyo Pro-700. These phones will take advantage of Sprint's PTT (Push-To-Talk) service and also support Sprint Mobile Broadband. Both phones support Qualcomm's QChat technology and feature call alerts (sending a repeating PTT alert to another subscriber), Group Connect (one-to-many capability, allowing you to communicate with up to 20 other Direct Connect subscribers), missed call notification and DC Permissions. The Sprint Mobile Sync online tool allows you to manage contact information, including setting up groups for PTT and text/voice messaging.

The Sanyo PRO-200 (left) is a slim clamshell and features Bluetooth, messaging and mobile email. Priced at US $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and 2-year service agreement. The PRO-700 is a rugged device complying with military standards for dust/shock/vibration. Priced at $69.99 after rebate and a 2-year service agreement.

Let's leave Softbank's line of new handphones in a while and jump to KDDI's. The Japanese telecommunications company just announced the inclusion of the Sanyo W62SA in its line of handsets to be released for 2008. Sanyo W62SA features a 2.8-inch WQVGA OLED screen, microSD slot of up to 2GB, and 1.97 megapixel camera. Best of all, the 51 x 106 x 19.5mm phone features Sanyo's IPX7 waterproof functionality 'til 1 minute and 30 seconds of submergence. The Sanyo W62SA handset can handle 300-minutes of call time and will be released by end of February 2008.

After investors saved Sanyo from a US$2.8billion debt, for the company to be sold is already a given. Indeed, Sanyo has revealed that they're selling to Kyocera Corporation. The deal, including Sanyo's debts, would amount to, reportedly, US$467 million, although a final price is yet to be set. The intensive competition has compelled Sanyo to sell out "to meet the best interest of the business and its stockholders." A total number of around 2,000 employees would be transferred to Kyocera although the handsets would still carry the Sanyo name in Japan and world wide.

The VPC-HD700 is the successor of Sanyo's VPC-HD2 and sports a 1280 by 720 resolution. The compact, pocket-fitting HD700 measures just 73.7 x 35 x 109 mm and weighs 189 g and it’s shaped for comfortable one-handed shooting on the run. It’s the ideal movie camera to match your active, on-the-go lifestyle.

Movies are recorded in the high-compression MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, and the new camera also takes stills at up to 7.1 megapixels. Furthermore, it adds in a 5x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom feature. The HD-700 features a Face Chaser function that detects up to 12 faces during shooting and when still images are played back, Blur Canceller adjusts for hand shaking.

"Rugged" seems to be the latest word doing the rounds at CES this year. Samsung did it with its Samsung Solid and Sanyo is following suit with the SCP-7050, going a step further to call it "ultra rugged" and "rugged enough to be compliant with military standard 810F for dust, shock, and vibration."

Although GPS-enabled phones are becoming dime a dozen, the most outstanding feature on this sturdy CDMA phone is its autonomous GPS that allows location data to be captured even if it is taken off the grid. The Java MVM allows the phone to run multiple Java applications simultaneously, ideal for running advanced navigation, tracking, and management applications. It is a perfect phone for people working in mobile field operations such as construction, and other rough environments.

Sanyo and NS-ELEX have launched the industry’s first new earphone microphone specifically designed for people communicating in a noisy or loud environment like construction or events marketing. This nifty device cancels the noise outside and amplifies your voice so you can communicate more clearly. Its use is not limited to mobile phones. You can plug it in your radios or any device with a microphone slot.

Though it looks like a cheap plastic toy, it’s quite pricey – 40,000 yen or $355. The wireless version powered by Bluetooth technology is priced 60,000 yen or $530. It will available as early as April 2008. If I may suggest, please make the design better or or else it will cramp our style.

Sprint and Sanyo announced that Sprint customers with an eye for fashion can now look forward to the new Sanyo Katana DLX cell phone. The Katana DLX, a Sprint Power Vision Phone, lets users to conveniently access Sprint's exclusive multimedia content including the Sprint Music Store.

The Sprint Music Store is your one-stop location for downloading songs over-the-air for 99 cents per song. A thin form factor and luxurious finish marks the Katana DLX, available in Platinum Ice, Champagne and Pink Satin. The other phone, Katana II by Sanyo (recenlty announced) is available in Cosmic Black, Pink Fascination and Midnight Steel.

Features on the Katana DLX include power save mode, the ability to use the phone as a modem, Bluetooth and large QVGA primary display. Supporting Sprint Navigation, you can access turn-by-turn directions on the phone.

There's a 1.3 megapixel camera on the Katana DLX, along with microSD card (up to 4GB in capacity). Priced at US $129.99 with a 2-year service agreement.

KDDi is getting a new phone to add to their line-up of Japanese mobiles - the W51SA TV phone. It features a high quality, 2.6-inch IPS liquid crystal display for crisp display of television, videos, and photos, as well as a smart sliding function.

With 1GB of storage, you can save up to 5 hours of video recordings on the phone. the Sanyo W51SA phone is compatible with the LISMO service, and includes an FM transmitter so you can play music on your phone through your car stereo.

These neat little device is available only through KDDi in Japan in three colors: Glass green, ivory white, and modern black. Pricing has not been announced.
